FAQ — Southwest JA Shipping

Question 1

How does barrel shipping work?

Accepted Answer

You pack your barrel with food, household goods, or other allowed items. We pick it up from your home in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, or Pennsylvania, ship it to Jamaica, handle all wharf clearance, and deliver it to your family's home within the Black River area of St. Elizabeth — at no extra cost to them.

Question 2

What types of barrels do you ship?

Accepted Answer

We ship two barrel types: Plastic Drum ($580 first barrel, $350 each additional) and Fibreboard Drum ($500 first barrel, $350 each additional). Both are food barrels. For clothing, shoes, or non-food items, contact us for a custom quote.

Question 3

How long does shipping take?

Accepted Answer

From the time we pick up your barrel, allow 6 to 8 weeks for shipping, wharf clearance, and home delivery within the Black River area of St. Elizabeth. We will notify you and your family when the barrel is on its way.

Question 4

What is included in the shipping rate?

Accepted Answer

The shipping rate covers door-to-port pickup in the US, ocean freight to Jamaica, full wharf clearance, and free home delivery within approximately one hour of Black River, St. Elizabeth. Your family pays nothing extra for delivery within that zone.

Question 5

Can I ship multiple barrels at once?

Accepted Answer

Absolutely. Many customers ship 2–4 barrels at a time. The first barrel ships at the full rate; each additional food barrel is just $350. Ship 5 or more barrels together and you automatically save $150 — no code needed. For 10 or more barrels, contact us for a bulk rate.

Question 6

What happens if my barrel is overweight?

Accepted Answer

Standard rates apply to normally packed food barrels. If a barrel is excessively heavy, an overweight surcharge may apply. We will let you know before shipping so there are no surprises.

Question 7

Can my family get home delivery in Jamaica?

Accepted Answer

Yes — free home delivery is included for addresses within approximately one hour of Black River, St. Elizabeth (the surrounding Black River area). For addresses outside that zone — including other parts of St. Elizabeth, Westmoreland, Hanover, St. James, Manchester, Clarendon, or St. Catherine — home delivery is available at an additional cost. Contact us with your family's address and we will provide a delivery quote.

Question 8

How do I book a barrel pickup?

Accepted Answer

Use our online booking form at southwestjashipping.com/book. Fill in your details, choose your barrel type, select a pickup date (Monday–Saturday, 8am–7pm), and provide your Jamaica collection contact. You'll be redirected to our secure payment page to confirm.

Question 9

What areas do you pick up from?

Accepted Answer

We pick up from New York City (from $250 — within 40 miles of Brooklyn; $5.50 per mile beyond that), New Jersey (from $190 — within 40 miles of Newark; $4.50 per mile beyond that), Connecticut (quote required), and Pennsylvania (quote required). Both NY and NJ fees are calculated automatically from your ZIP code on the booking form. Call us at (929) 290-5168 for a CT or PA pickup quote.

Question 10

What days and times do you pick up?

Accepted Answer

We pick up Monday through Saturday, 8am to 7pm. We are closed on Sundays. You can select your preferred pickup date and time window when booking online.

Question 11

How far in advance should I book?

Accepted Answer

We recommend booking at least 3–5 business days in advance to secure your preferred pickup date. During busy periods (Christmas, Easter, summer), book 1–2 weeks ahead.

Question 12

Can I reschedule or cancel my pickup?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Call us at (929) 290-5168 at least 24 hours before your scheduled pickup to reschedule or cancel. Same-day cancellations may be subject to a fee.

Question 13

What if I am not home at pickup time?

Accepted Answer

Someone must be present to hand over the barrel and sign off. If no one is available, we will attempt to contact you. A missed pickup fee may apply for a second visit.

Question 14

What can I pack in my barrel?

Accepted Answer

You can pack non-perishable food items (canned goods, rice, flour, cooking oil, seasonings), toiletries, soap, household cleaning products, and dry goods. Clothing and shoes are allowed but at a different rate — contact us for a quote.

Question 15

What items are NOT allowed in barrels?

Accepted Answer

We cannot ship alcohol, firearms, ammunition, perishable or fresh foods, flammable liquids, medications (without prior approval), or any items prohibited by Jamaican customs. When in doubt, call us before packing.

Question 16

Do I need to seal my barrel before pickup?

Accepted Answer

Yes — your barrel should be fully packed and sealed before our driver arrives. Use strong packing tape to secure the lid. We are not responsible for items that shift or break due to improper packing.

Question 17

Should I label my barrel?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Clearly label your barrel with the recipient's full name, address, and phone number in Jamaica. This helps with customs clearance and ensures your family can collect it without issues.

Question 18

Can I mix food and non-food items in one barrel?

Accepted Answer

We recommend keeping food and non-food items in separate barrels where possible. Mixed barrels may be subject to additional customs inspection. Contact us if you have a specific situation.

Question 19

What is Shop & Ship?

Accepted Answer

Shop & Ship is our full-service option where you send us your grocery list and we do all the shopping, packing, and shipping for you. It's perfect if you're too busy to pack a barrel yourself or live far from a Jamaican grocery store.

Question 20

How does Shop & Ship pricing work?

Accepted Answer

The total service fee is $715 (Fibreboard Drum) or $735 (Plastic Drum) — covering the barrel, our $120 shopping service, and shipping/clearance. On top of that, you pay for the actual items at cost. You set the budget and we send you an itemized receipt.

Question 21

What items can you shop for?

Accepted Answer

We can purchase most grocery items, household goods, toiletries, canned goods, cooking oil, flour, seasonings, and non-perishable food items. We source from Jamaican grocery stores and wholesalers in the New York area.

Question 22

How do I pay for the items you purchase?

Accepted Answer

After we review your list and confirm availability, we will send you a total. You pay securely online before we begin shopping. We send you an itemized receipt once shopping is complete.

Question 23

Can I mix my own items with items you shop for?

Accepted Answer

Yes. You can drop off items at our location and we will fill the rest of the barrel with items from your shopping list. Contact us to arrange a drop-off.

Question 24

How long does Shop & Ship take?

Accepted Answer

We typically shop and pack within 2–3 business days of receiving your request and payment. Add 6–8 weeks for shipping and clearance. We will keep you updated throughout the process.

Question 25

How do I track my barrel?

Accepted Answer

Visit southwestjashipping.com/track and enter your tracking number or the phone number used at booking. You will see your barrel's current status across all 6 stages: booked, picked up, in transit, arrived in Jamaica, cleared customs, and ready for collection.

Question 26

When will my family be notified that the barrel is ready?

Accepted Answer

We contact the Jamaica delivery contact you provided at booking once the barrel has cleared customs and is out for delivery. Make sure the phone number you provide is current and reachable.

Question 27

What if my barrel is delayed?

Accepted Answer

Shipping delays can occasionally occur due to vessel schedules or customs processing. If your barrel is significantly delayed beyond the 6–8 week estimate, contact us at (929) 290-5168 and we will investigate on your behalf.

Question 28

What if items are missing or damaged?

Accepted Answer

Contact us immediately at (929) 290-5168 if you believe items are missing or damaged. We take every claim seriously and will work with you to resolve the issue. Proper packing and labeling helps prevent most damage.

Question 29

Are there any hidden fees?

Accepted Answer

No. The shipping rate covers shipping, all wharf clearance, and free home delivery within the Black River area of St. Elizabeth. Your family pays nothing extra within that zone. The only additional fee is the US pickup charge, which we quote when you book.

Question 30

What payment methods do you accept?

Accepted Answer

We accept all major credit and debit cards through our secure GoDaddy Payments checkout. Payment is required to confirm your booking.

Question 31

Question 32

Is the pickup fee included in the online booking price?

Accepted Answer

The pickup fee is separate and depends on your location. NYC is $250, North Jersey is $190, and CT/PA require a custom quote. This will be confirmed when we call you within 24 hours of booking.
